Miscellaneous Stuff You Need to Know

  • You will never be perfect with Internet marketing. Trying to be has been the downfall of many otherwise brilliant people. Get your stuff out there and refine as you go.

  • Along those lines, no Internet marketing expert, myself included knows everything there is to know about this subject. If they claim, they do they are delusional and you should make great efforts to protect your wallet from them and from the things they suggest.

  • A reminder from last issue that I hate UPS

  • Dell computers lets you pick and choose just the right equipment you need in your computer and then will lease it or sell it to you. For rapidly expanding small businesses leasing could be a better deal because of the tax write offs and necessity to upgrade sooner than regular consumers. Check with your tax professional and business advisor to see what is right for you.

  • Don't forget to surge protect your network. How do I know this is important? I just had a lightning strike. All the computers were protected with power supplies and surge protectors but the network hardware was not. The lightning strike knocked out a least two network hubs and an ethernet card. It appears that memory on the computers has been damaged and maybe some damage to the DSL modem. The jury is still out on it. THIS WAS A SUPER DUMB MISTAKE ON MY PART! Don't let it happen to you!

  • You can buy laminated tip cards at places like Office Depot and Comp USA that have quick tips for using your operating system like Windows XP easier. They are also available for lots of other things too, like Word, Outlook, and Basic HTML (this comes in handy when you really get serious about this) See what's available at http://www.quickstudy.com

  • DSL is generally accepted as the best and most consistent option for small businesses when it comes to high speed Internet. You can purchase the speed you need and you don't have to share access with others like you must do with cable modem and satellite. The installation is usually tougher and most of the installers are clueless, but once it gets going, it's generally more consistent.

  • Serious Internet marketers should make the decision to go to high speed access whenever possible. You will be tremendously more productive than waiting for slow dial up connections (although I do keep one as a backup so I can keep working during occasional downtimes on the broadband.) Here's a resource to see what's available in your area http://www.broadbandbuyer.com/
